How to get Your Internet Business Started,

Your Domain

To get a Website up and running you need two essential things:
1) A domain name i.e. Register through a Domain Registrar - http://yourdomain.com
2) Webhosting – Provided by an internet service provider (ISP)

If you've never built a website before, don't worry it's very easy, particullarly with WordPress.

Let's Get Started TODAY

The first step in the process is that you need to have an idea of what your business idea is about so that you can work on a domain name that suits whatever you intend to do.

If you already have a business or an idea to go with then try to obtain a domain that suits you and it does not have to be the name of the idea/business you have, there are thousands of examples of website names that are unrelated to the activities carried out on the website, so don't get stuck on this.

If you dont know what type of business modal you will be using just try registering your name, initials or somthing along these lines and simply start a blog on a subject that you are interested in. Just do something now and it will develop as time goes on.

Let's start by registering a domain...

You must have a registered domain, it is not possible to set up a website with and ISP (Internet Service Provider) without one. However many ISP’s are also registrars for domain names so if you find and ISP you prefer then most likely you can register a domain through them.

You can register a Domain with a different company than your ISP, you would possibly do this because of price, if you do it will require a redirection of your DNS toward the ISP you choose if you do this.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is basically the web address of a particular website. For example "google.com" or "webideacreator.com" is a domain name.

To have a serious online business, you NEED your own domain name.

Why do you need a domain name?

A Domain name is the address of your site on the internet the same as your home or business has an address in the offline world. There cannot be a duplicate web address, every address is unique.

There are plenty of free web hosts who will host your site on their server without you owning your domain. Typically they'll put it on a sub-domain of their own domain. The problem with that is that you don't own the domain to your website. THEY in fact own it.

Another reason you need to have your own domain is that you can build EQUITY in your business. If you don't own your domain, it's like renting a home instead of buying it. You'd be building equity in someone else's property for them.

By building equity in your own online property it becomes an asset that you can keep for the long term, or sell to an investor.

Hopefully you understand why it's so important to have your own domain. Now let's talk about what type of domain you should register.

Domain Extensions

First and foremost try to get a .com extension, it may not be easy and you will need to be innovative with words to find an acceptable combination that you can use in your domain. Most familiar short names will be taken however adding words or rearranging words in the domain can give you something very near what you want.

What you decide for your domain name is really immaterial, in the end it will come down to marketing and SEO that will make your brand memorable, who would think that a “Google” or a “Yahoo” would be search engines, and become as big as they are today.

So although there is a significant role of the domain name don’t get bogged down with this, if there is something you like then get it.

Registering a domain really isn’t expensive, if you consider what it costs to register a name in the offline world its dam cheap. You will more likely find yourself keeping several domain names for future use.

It was once thought that long domains were no good however as time goes on it is found that long tail domains have a real advantage, if you are clever enough you can build a key word relating to your business into the domain.

The next best domain extensions are generally considered to be .NET, .ORG, and sometimes .INFO and .BIZ.
Now let's consider what your domain name should be...

Choosing a Domain Name

If you're choosing the main domain for your online business, there are several strategic marketing factors that can come into play. Often the best website names are "made up" words (eBay.com, Google.com, Yahoo.com, etc), while others are more straight forward referencing the type of site

However, when it comes to selecting a domain for a content-based informational site it is generally far-and-away best to choose a name that concisely describes exactly WHAT the site is about.

So if your website is about software, the best domain would probably be software.com. If that wasn't available, you could look to see if other extensions are available, such as software.net, software.org, etc..

If those were not available, look at adding another word to the domain. Most people would start by trying combinations like websoftware.com, softwareonline.com, etc. Or add your name for example if your name was John, you could register johnssoftware.com, or if you're marketing locally you could register your town or citysoftware.com.

Traditionally, a domain is less valuable when hyphenated. For example, soft-ware.com would be worth less than software.com. That's probably because it's more difficult to remember a domain with a hyphen in it, or to advertise it etc.

Domain pitfalls to avoid

DON'T use intentional misspellings.
DON'T use abbreviations.
DON'T use numbers (digits), unless you have a really good reason.
DON'T make it too long. Shorter domains are more memorable, and generally more attractive in your advertising and search engine listings.

It's okay to include multiple keywords if your site warrants it (low-cost-car-insurance.com), but don't go overboard because it will make you look like a spammer.

Registering your domain

There are hundreds of companies on the internet where you can register a domain. It really comes down to price and reliability.

If you've already found a good and reliable registrar, use them.

One of the most important features is having a registrar that allows you to QUICKLY and EASILY change your DNS by yourself if you need to. You will need to use that feature right away if you have a different ISP.
